WOW!  :o

$200? Man, I'm jealous, I'd love one of those.

That is a major bargain no matter how you look at it.

A great acquisition, 500eguy, you must be very happy! :)

Yes i am very pleased... Hmmmmm the car being held back is very interesting..lol... It has rust in the usual places... everything is very fixable, i just have to get around to changing that oil because it looks bad... Thanks for looking up the vin for me! i will post more pictures as soon as i get around to it:)

500eguy

I got around to taking a few more shots of the car, Let me know if you guys spot anything odd or missing from the engine bay, i don't know what to look for.

I remember reading that MB offered an upgrade to change to a double row timing chain but I've seen in the past w126 380's on ebay with snapped single row timing chains.  For some reason, the upgrade wasn't taken up by everyone.  Perhaps it wasn't a general recall and free upgrade.   I suppose taking a tappet cover off would reveal.

I've gotta ask, even if people stayed with single row timing chains, ie if 500eguy put a new single row in, how long would it last for?

what is the cost of a new Chain, i do not want to swap another motor, i am trying to put money into my 116, this car will probably go on the back burner for now. I should find out of it has had the upgrade done to it, because when i had the car running it was making no tapping noises.

That is one hell of a bargain

$200 USD is like $300AU, I would pay $1000 AU for an old convertible to use for summer, drive it around for a few months, regardless of condition,

come this summer I am tempted to take a grinder to a old benz for my "poor mans cabriolet"

Ok guys, i need your wisdom, i am trying to get this thing running... When i firdt picked it up it was running very rich blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. I had it towed and it has not started since. The fuel smells like varnish so i am guessing that is bad. Anyone have any ideas how i can get her started? she just cranks and cranks now.

Andrew280SEL

Hmm, that doesn't sound too good...

Does it fire at all while you crank it? Or is it just lifeless cranking?

it seems like it wants to fire up... esp if spray starting fluid. i am fairly sure its not the chain. any ideas guys?

Andrew280SEL

I wish I could help more, but my mechanical knowledge just isn't as great as I'd like... :-[

My only advice is to do an all round check, perhaps starting with checking the spark. My 280SEL was once doing as you say yours is, firing but never starting, and sure enough my spark was quite weak. Turned out to be a dodgy coil lead.

Maybe after that, check fuel delivery and things like that just to cross them off the list. See if flooring the throttle, if you haven't already done so, and see if it fires any better. It could be flooding.
If you don't have a workshop manual, the online one in the Library will tell you all you need to know to do these things.

If most things check off fine, then it would be time to investigate into further, bigger possible problems. :)

I would start by making sure you are getting fuel. Disconnect the safety swich connection at the throttle body. Disconnect the return line on the fuel distributor (one closest to the firewall) and run a tube into a jar/bottle. Get someone to turn on the ignition and make sure you are getting fuel flow. You should get 1lt in 40 seconds.

If OK, then I would check the timing to make sure that is OK, then check that you are getting spark at the plugs.

this is what i did as its easier than disconnecting the fuel pump to check if its the problem...remove the air filter housing and pour 20mLs of fuel directly into the inlet on top of the engine...if it starts to fire, pour a fraction more (not flooding it)...you should be able to keep the car running like this if the fuel delivery is the problem,,,then at least you have an idea that the engine isnt getting any fuel before you get under the car and biten by all sorts of random insects (or at least thats what happened to me with the two paddock cars!)
best of luck

obviously not being a mechanic, i can take no liability if things shuold actually blow up!

While this method MAY get it going, it is highly dangerous to your health, and won't tell you whether the pump is operating to specification. It might work, but if it isn't pumping enough fuel, you will never get it to run right.

i will try these things tomorrow or the next day... what does the fuel safety switch look like?
