BJ

I picked her up yesterday. She's a 1981 Mercedes-Benz 200.
- Manual gearbox
- Aircon
- Cruise control
- Central locking
- 119 000km (74 000miles)

Aircon needs regassing and conversion, central locking and cruise control works most of the time!

Here she is:

That's a very clean and smart W123. They are lovely cars, almost as lovely as W116s ;)

It looks like an excellent car - well done.
Now please feel welcome to stay on the forum; don't desert us just because you are moving to a different area of the Benz family!!  ;D ;D ;D

Mate... i noticed that Jo-berg had a heap of snow fall randomly the 2 days ago.

Did you have to endure this while recovering your new beast???

Hey BJ, that is really nice and well done on the purchase!! Now the first job you need to do is to remove those horrible plastic number plate surrounds and put on the proper Mercedes stainless steel surrounds!!

Where do I find such things?

I was thinking of nicking them off the 350SE. *ducks*  ;D :P

Sir, you shall not 'nick' things off a 116.  Greg is correct in saying that the 123 plate holders are stainless steel, but on my 116 they are CHROMED.  THat's how I got the car.

BJ,

You should be able to find them quite easily in a scrapyard - I found a set for my 6.9 at the first place I went to.

Nice car, BTW. Just keep an ear out for timing chain clatter. I remember that we used to replace them at roughly 80 000km - the single row timing chain is the only weak point on these M102 engines and it's a pretty easy job.
"You've bought another bloody car?!? We should have you committed!" he shrieked, storming out of the room

More or less how would that sound? The car has a very slight tic tic tic tic that's audible at this moment when idling. But I have a suspicion that this is normal.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!

BJ,

It's very distinct. If the chain is badly stretched, then the engine sound like a kettle boiling when idling, and this dangerous. Broken chain = bent valves and head off.

When the car starts, there should be no rattling sound from the engine at all. If the chain is worn, then you can hear the chain rattle within the first 4 or 5 seconds from when you start the car, until the oil pressure comes up. Always replace the chain and tensioner together

I suspect the tic-tic sound you are currently hearing is a loose tappet

That's a beautiful little car! And a manual, should be fun!  ;D

How's fuel consumption? It must be good I guess or you wouldn't have bought it.
