A good friend of mine lost an eye when he dropped a screw driver that hit the fan and shot back up straight at him.
So, this isn't a trick I'd be trying myself.
But entertaining to watch, none the less.  :)

Damn that looks dangerous.  It reminds me that apparently some guys change timing chains in Mercedes V8's by splitting th eold chain, linking in the new one, and then winding it through on the starter motor.  No way I'm that brave.

I have actually seen that done by Frank Burton in the early 1980's when they were converting all the early 126 V8's which had the single row chain to double row.

I understand he is no longer in Business and has probably retired but he had a little Workshop called "Frank's Autoservices" in Caversham, Dunedin, NZ (same suburb from where CraigS originated)  and was the Guru of all things M-B and most things Audi in the South Island and was an official M-B Workshop consisting of one lone man who could hold his own against all the  Agencies in the South Island.

He held the chain taut in one hand, held a remote starter button in the other and "walked" the chain in while at the same time he was talking to me about the flickering Tacho needle problem I was having in my Audi 200 turbo.

Some things leave a lasting impression.

The level of danger reminds me of a crank handle!

Not that I doubt your story Bill, but I don't believe any 380 motors installed in RHD cars had single row chains.

It is alleged that single row chains were installed only on very early cars destined for the US market and that this was to improve fuel economy. At least, this is the conclusion that I have come to having read and heard a lot about the subject, but it could of course be incorrect. 8)

But yes, he certainly sounds like a talented individual. ;)
