How big is too big?

I parked the other day, and upon getting out, noticed that the newer sedan parked next to me was mammoth - it dwarfed the W116, being a good six to eight inches taller, though a more rounded, modern design that I didn't like.  I couldn't tell if it actually had more interior room or if it just raised everything up farther off the ground.

Walking around behind the car, I found that it was a Ford Five Hundred SEL, which is apparently similar to a Taurus.  I never realized they were that large.

The 500 actually is a Taurus... they tried to use the "500" moniker for a while then decided that the "Taurus" name had more sales potential and switched back.

I have found that most modern cars feel bulky inside and have proportionately less room inside than our preferred square cars.  The doors seem to be three feet thick these days!  I rode in a new Mustang a while back and was disappointed in how remote it felt.  Visibility is terrible with high sills and little glass.  Thick doors, big plastic parts all over, etc, etc...   There was no sense of connection with the car which is a real shame considering the performance.

What I find amusing is parking my '90 Civic next to a new one.  Might as well be an original Mini.

Also, it seems like trucks have bigger body panels and are higher off the ground, while not having a larger bed or more towing capacity. (in general)

Have a look at the external dimensions of the Golf VI. Its meant to be a small car.

Compared to a lot of modern larger cars, the 116 is actually quite compact indeed... However, there is a lot more room inside the 116 thanks to the very practical shape, and the design is very sleek making it appear larger too.

What?  you mean they are supposed to carry stuff?  :)

The real odd part is the horsepower race.  Seems that 300 HP is considered barely adequate these days for a family sedan according to the "exports".  Luckily i am an amateur and cannot realize how deprived I am driving such moderately powered classics. :)

Most people these days buy trucks and SUV's for one reason only - due to the gas guzzler tax on large sedans it's cheaper to buy an even bigger vehicle that you'll never use, rather than the more comfortable large sedan that you'd really prefer.  IMHO a large sedan (or coupe) with trailer hitch is perfect - plenty of space and size to feel comfortable (the W116 is waaaay more comfortable than the W115/W123) and ability to tote along big stuff every blue moon when you need to.
