Their skills were acknowledged by the takeover but AMG post the Mercedes-Benz takeover is no longer the great independent tuning company that they were. In my opinion, the letters AMG do no carry the same respect now that they are just a department of MB.

But don't get me wrong; the new cars are impressive but just not the same impressive as if an independent had improved on the already great original models. Even MB have acknowledged their watering down of the AMG name with their need to create the Black Series and other limited edition models in recent years.

Thanks for the history Motec.

Unfortunately it is always very sketchy when it comes to the 70's.

I have their brochure from the early 80's but the 116 was already only an historical oddity by this time although it lists the part numbers for the body parts.

It would be interesting to know cam grind data for the 6.9 and 7.3 motors but apparently nobody knows.

"Bespoke" doesn't really apply these days, so it's no wonder they needed to go down this path of introducing other limited production models to fill the void.

I am sure Brabus, Carlsson, Kleemann and Renntech would disagree. ;)

Though I don't think any of them were around for the W116 (Brabus started in 1977 but I have never seen a Brabus modified 116)

Sure,

My thoughts mainly pertain to AMG though.

I don't give much thought to new AMG cars. They are no different to any other Mercedes except for using more powerful engines (originally designed to be such, not regular engines modified like true tuners) and adding body kits etc. I see them everywhere and know that the vast majority of those cars will see the same traffic conditions as my cars.

Old-school AMG were unique and impressive because they weren't a part of Mercedes-Benz but just some guys in a shed taking impressive cars and pushing them to their limits. Taking a 6.9L M100 and increasing it to 7.3L is impressive. Those other tuners are doing the same today and that makes them impressive too (but not necessarily better than the stock MBs they are based on).
