euro license plates

It has become quite the craze here in Calgary, Canada to have european license plates mounted on the front of (mostly German) cars.  It is only required by law in Alberta to have license plates on the rear of the vehicle. Is this also the case elsewhere? If so, what are they worth and how common are they.

I have a german plate on my 80 450SEL in Los Angeles, got it from germanplates.com



I had them do it using the actual US plate letters and numbers but with the Stuttgart S,  and added the german state inspection sticker for a very original look, hehehe...
