I drove a Rolls Silver Spirit II yesterday.

it was incredible. i was impressed. and i cant remember the last time i was impressed. i think it was the first time i drove a W140, but this was better.

the steering was so light i couldnt control the car at first, it wandered all over the road, but once i got used to it, i really appreciated it. it was also overpowered, it just surged.

what an experience. its a highlight of my life so far. im amazed at how one can control such a massive car so effortlessly. it really makes you feel special sitting in that thing.

if you ever get a chance to try one, do it.

went to a wedding out in the sticks a couple of years ago,on a farm. we , the guests were all sitting on bales of hay, (the pews) and this 1928 ford/willys vehicle drove in chugging, chuffing, coughing and spluttering with the bridesmaids in, behind it came a rolls royce 1938 spirit, ghost or something like that.it just purred in. amazing when comparing it to the chuffing and chugging of the other one.
got chatting to the owner and he owned a car museum in the small town about 30 kays away.
to cut a long story short, he collected me the next morning from the hotel and i went with him to drive the cars back, i had the privelige or should i say luck to drive the rolls back.i have to say that it was the most difficult car to drive, following the other car, which was slower, but still motored, i had to change gears on the right, on a RHD car, not much space, set the fuel mixture and timing while accellerating and decelerating, and changing gears and and and.
what an experience, crapping myself that i dont prang this 5million buck car in the traffic in a town i dont know.
a memory i will always treasure.
i take my hat off to people of the old days, they sure had their work cut for them driving

kolin:  My wedding cars (very ancient history!) were a pair of Royces - 1936 and 1937.  The bridesmaids' car was a 6-cylinder Sedanca de Ville (a "small" RR) and the bridal car was a monster V12 Phantom III. The Phantom (RHD) had the gearstick at the driver's right-hand knee, making gear changing rather awkward because of space (or lack thereof).  Magnificent car, though, and the two Royce drivers raced each other across Sydney on that Sunday afternoon like a pair of well-mannered hoons (if that's not to big a contradiction).

The only photo I have left is this, which doesn't really give much idea of the Phantom's size:

I have to say OBH, that you have improved with age. Maybe like a Grange? ;D ;D ;D

Tee hee - thank you, kind Sir!  There are those, however, who would argue that like some other aged wines I've turned to vinegar!   :D :D

kolin:  The Phantom had no roof over the driver's and co-driver's section (at least on our wedding day; it may have been that there was a retractable or removable roof panel for inclement weather) - only over the 5-6-seater rear which was entirely separated from the driver (although I think the glass partition could be rolled down - it was 1972, so a bit hard to remember such details).

The engine was, I think, all alloy, and about 7.3 litres!
