Drive it, store it or kill it?

As we come across a classic Mercedes for a good price but needing a lot of exterior care ie. missing trim, needing paint and rust repair, should we:

Buy it and drive it until the wheels fall off. A day behind the wheel of a tired Mercedes is better than a day doing anything else.

Buy it for a rolling restoration.

Buy and store it. Keep it out of the hands of hoodlums and deliquents.

Leave it for some other poor soul who doesn't know any better knowing it will end up in a scrap heap.

I am looking at a very worn and tired W111 230S that had the top end of the engine rebuilt 15 years and 10,000 miles ago by my independant and tat has changed hands more than a few times by those thinking the car was worth more than the asking price.

I want to buy it to keep it out of the hands of someone who wont appreciate it and allow it to further deteriorate. My dillema is driving a worn and tired MB an insult to the brand or does it somehow still give the air of prestige as I think it does?

I suppose what it comes down to is, how far gone is it? Once upon a time, Fintails were practically worthless and of course, it will have lived through that period.

If it runs and drives well enough, you may be able to drive it and restore it at the same time.
