Diving into a 6.3 with crossed fingers

If you have access to a portable compressor, try pumping it up using the schrader valve on the tank on the inner left front guard. It is about half way up the tank, and points towards the outside. Alternately, and if it won't pump up by itself, try and use an air jack and pug wooden blocks between the axles and where the rubber blocks should go. It will be obvious. You will have all sorts of trouble getting it off if you don't get it up in the air.

Thank You sir, i asked the owner today about that valve and he says it will not take air, he says that the valve is plugged. Seems fishy.....

Sure does!  Mine (on W112 300SE) is, as far as I know, original and untouched, yet I was able to get air into the tank through that valve two weeks ago and lift the car from its low-slung state considerably faster than the car's on-board compressor can.

What's he trying to hide?

Johnny,

The working pressure is quite high - I know that on a 600 it's between (if memory serves me) 14 and 16 Bar, but it may be less on a 6.3. I'm not sure whether a portable compressor will be able to deliver enough pressure to lift the car. Craig, have you done this before? I'd be interesetd to know.

The easiest would probably be to jack up the car and shove in some wood or rubber blocks, as Craig suggested.

Good on you for taking the plunge btw. Now register on the M-100 site and let the games begin!
"You've bought another bloody car?!? We should have you committed!" he shrieked, storming out of the room

Pressure is 170 psi from the compressor, and 140 psi at the bellows (air springs).  The system is high pressure, low volume.

A dinky compressor won't do much, but the standard service-station tyre-pump compressor handles it.

Yes, I have done it, but not with one of the gasoline powered ones. I used a fairly large capacity electric compressor, albeit portable.

Johnny, the 6.3 uses an air suspension system very similar to the earlier W112 300SE.  Chris Johnson is hte acknowleged specialist in this area and he has written some pages on 300SE suspension that will be applicable to you :

The main home page is here : http://www.300se.org/

But specifically he has written about transporting dead 300SE's - read this here :

I will read that and will let you guys know more when i actually go down there to see for myself if i can pump up air into the car. This guy is not familiar with this car at all. Thanks guys !

kolin

buy it
what would a new sports car cost in your country and compare the cost of a new car against a 6.3 and some money spent on it.
it still works out cheaper.
;D
