I'm more of a DS fan when it comes to Citroën, but nice to see another oldie being saved.
I admire these from a distance, far to scared to lay hands on one because of the complexity, but this certainly looks like a worthy challenge to a man of your skill

I love the CX, these cars were so ahead of their time when I was growing up... Congrats on the new project, S Class! Starting with a non rusty car is always a winner in my book.

Yes thanks guys, it will be a challenge for sure, mainly due to my limited time.  When I was shopping, I felt the lack of rust on this one was far more important than whether it ran or not.

I sure hope your confidence is deserved. If you can make the hydraulics and the Diravi work as they should, the engine itself would/should not be an issue. Funny you'd start with engine and transmission. You're talking about a flush, or refurbishment? Both motor and gearbox are about the most reliable parts of a CX. It's everything else I'd be checking.
Keep the posts coming. I'll be watching from the front row to see if you can make this a reliable daily driver.
Kinda jealous already!

Awesome find,

They are few and far between in this part of the world too, although very appealing in an unusual kind of way.

Best of luck with the resto too.

Cheers,

As a boy in the 80s I have fond memories of my mum driving the 1980 Citroen Club Special - a smaller brother to the CX. The hydraulic suspension was so comfortable, the single spoke steering wheel - very quirky, the air cooled engine had immense character but the bit I remember most were the variable rate windscreen wipers. It seemed so exotic at the time. I only disliked the fact that the indicators were non self cancelling. About 8 years before I "discovered" Mercedes-Benz, Citroen was the coolest thing with 5 doors.

Thanks guys.

The engine turns OK, but its a simple beast, and I've decided to fully rebuild it before trying to start it.  The transmission is the ZF3HP22 3-speed auto unit.  After 20 years of non-operation, I'm almost 100% confident the bands and clutch discs will have dried out, and rusted behind the friction material leading to delamination.  So we will again completely overhaul it before attempting a startup.  At least parts for the engine and transmission are all freely available and fairly priced.

...But, there are hydraulic pumps all over that car. Depending on the model, 3 or 4 or them. Prepare to not find anyone to refurbish them, except for some obscure address in France, or pay insane top dollar for new/NOS. ...

Stan, it is really not that complicated.  There is one (conventional) belt driven hydraulic pump, and an accumulator that supplies the whole system (just like the 6.9), admittedly, it branches off to subsystems (brakes, suspension, DIRAVI etc). I should also mention, that because the braking system does not use vacuum assistance, or brake fluid, it is not susceptible to rusted out brake lines, frozen calipers etc.  It is all round much easier to maintain.

Since you made that comment above I was totally perplexed as to where you got this idea, so I have finally done some googling.

The CX (and other early citroens ID DS GS GSA BX etc) has, at each corner, a strut and associated sphere (just like a 6.9...).  Beginning in 2001 however, the C5 Citroen ushered in a new era whereby there is no central pump - each corner has an integral pump/sphere assembly.

- each corner has an integral pump/sphere assembly.  Indeed, as well as a main pump and a diravi.
The spheres come in many different models. One needs to make sure which types it takes. Getting a trustworthy brand is another choice. Price, reliability, availability. Sorry, but I have forgotten the right answers to this one, but I am sure Rumb knows, or can find out as well. There is a lot of talk about sphere producers on the French forums. Lots of bad brands around.
I sure hope there's been movement on the production side of the market on the hydraulic pump front. We will no doubt find out watching this space! ;D

Yes, but only as of the 2001 year model C5 Citroen.

The 60's, 70's and 80's model Citroens only have a single pump.  I'm not sure how else to convince you of this.

You seem convinced I will not be able to get this car running.  I'm not going to argue about it any further, you are welcome to your opinion.

I wouldn't worry about it. Its a great car and I envy you just having it to look at. Any way all you need is the enthusiasm to do it great things can be achieved. Good luck I look forward to postings of it on the road.

Haha yes it is a transverse engine, front wheel drive.  Two features I normally won't tolerate in a car.  Yes, ashtrays all round.  It was the early 80's remember lol.
