I had one of these a number of years ago, '83 model so early-ish and yep the timing chain had let go on the previous owner while he was cruising down the autobahn to the Gold Coast, generating a full

engine rebuild needless to say. It had all the receipts when I bought it, new pistons, cams, the works. I don't know if they rebuilt it with something other than standard specs but it was no slouch, could easily

light up the back end when you gave it the news, comes with a roadworthy so what the hell, as MT says, much better than a renter.

After some waffling and seeing a w123 230e for $600 I bought that instead.  Incredible bargain, it comes with 5 months rego and many problems haha. I have to get it up to scratch and get a safety certificate so I can transfer it over (not quite legit but the car is basically free even if I just use up the rego and throw it out). Who is your favorite auto parts store down here and where can I get some tools for a decent price (jacks/stands, wrenches, etc.)? Thanks so much guys! I will have to get some photos for you!

A nice substitute for a 116 Ian and I've been sorely tempted to pick up a 280 Wagon over the years, although the 2.3 is a tad small they dont do too badly in the 123 sedans and they are a reliable and economical engine when looked after.

The 2.3 in my W124 wagon did very well for the huge miles it has done but the 123's i believe (Based on the 3 I've driven) were quicker and more torquey than their later bretheren.

Just do the timing chain asap if you have no reliable service record.

As for favourite auto parts store?

Id try Supercheap auto, they have Stanley tools cheap and their stuff isnt too bad based on my purchases.

As for parts?

Only one place, MB Spares in Canberra (Fyshwick).

They will overnight parts to you and they are one of the best value Benz parts dealers around as far as im concerned.
