A question for US posters

What exactly are "tags" ?

Are they what we in AUS call number plates, or are they a registration sticker?

How does the system work, is it the same in all US states?

In AUS a registration sticker shows registration and compulsory injury insurance has been paid.

That's how it is in Victoria, does it work the same in other AUS states?

Western Australia no longer has any form of sticker... just the license plates on the car and that's it.

The "Tags" might be the US form of "registration sticker", which is actually placed on the license plate rather than elsewhere on the vehicle. There were usually recesses for you to place the sticker.

American (all states) "tags" are the same as Australian "number plates."  U.S. registration and inspection stickers are applied either to windshields (windscreens) or to the tag, depending on what the particular state practice is. Proof of insurance is issued by the insurance company and that paper document is usually carried in the glove compartment (oh, my, what is that called in Australia?). By the way, could we end this confusion of terms by initiating new ones, e.g., hoods and bonnets become "hoonnets" or "boods" and trunks and boots become "troots" or "bonks." On second thought, never mind.

Its rather interesting that we speak the same basic language, yet almost everything has a different name in each country in slang or official language.

Then there is also different spelling of certain words between US & UK English.

koan

Thanks for that.

I think glove compartment in the shiny sales literature but glove box in common use.

Who wears gloves to drive anymore anyway?

Those were the days when men used monocles, hats and Cains...   ::)

My sister-in-law owns a Prius, and you talk about smugness?!  It's to the point now where she comes to visit my wife, instead of leaving town, I ask if she'd like to ride in a real car, not a glorified golf cart. The worst part is I don't feel the least bit guilty.  :D

Is that because she realises a Prius out on the open road is not the same clean, fuel efficient vehicle it is in town at 30kmh?
