Title: 2000 CRV GEARBOX MYSTERY
Post by: floyd111 on 01 July 2018, 06:44 PM
Getting ready for my 10th gearbox in 1.5 years. First one lost first gear, and was sent for refurbishment. 7 others followed, all burnt to a crisp within days or weeks. Total 3 gear boxes were refurbished 9 times by 3 different gear box companies. Found that the gearbox oil coling pipe in my radiator was clogged, and the reason for all these break downs. But, gearbox nr 9, not burnt, still has that first gear issue., and a few more . In the meantime,  every part known to any of us has been changed to new, with no results.
Can anyone suggest what the mystery solution could be?
We will now install a fresh gearbox from a perfect CRV into our car for the day, and see if it's the box or the car that butches things up. If it's the car, we do not know why, or where that issue could be. I know it's the car. Sheer logic. Still, the mystery continues for now.

Good lord, 9 gearboxes, just flog the bloody thing :o I too have fallen prey to the Honda hype, they are a shadow of their former selves in terms of build quality, but then again so is Benz, so where does that leave us...

I would have dumped it, but I replaced nearly every part on that car the last 2 years, even the seats front and back. Refurbished engine, the lot. Proper audio-equipped, Dynamat-covered, it drives like a dream, as long as you discount the gearbox mystery. That car has always been perfect for us, living on a mountain top, needing to ship family and goods up and down that steep jungle road twice or thrice a day.
By now it's become a matter of principle, haha!
No, this is untenable. This time around, last try, last gearbox transplant, after I will buy another CRV, one that looks presentable on the outside and has an engine that's not dripping in oil, a cheap one from the dump and transplant all my new parts, including the dynamatted/hifi doors, and hope that I don't transplant that transmission Gremlin unknowingly.

I'd be looking at how the box failed, then looking at what may have caused it. Also, what type of automatic is it?

Presumably the car has a new radiator fitted, is it possible that cooler might also have failed?

Some of these modern transmissions don't have internal filters, so any particulate can also cause issues. Also, if the torque converter wasn't dealt with, it could also still be full of wear materials from the previous unit.

my transmission guy will never do a rebuild without also replacing or rebuilding the torque converter.

torque converter was changed several times, and especially this last time around. Selenoids and NPS are all new as well. Cooler flows normally.

Got a new symptom that may lead us to a new directions. If in neutral or park, running idle, the RPM is at 500. If, in idle, I carefully push the pedal till it reaches exactly 1000rpm-and keep it there for half a second or more, strange things happen. The engine now behaves like it gets stung by a bee every second, and revs go up and down from 1000 to 1600RPM in 1 second intervals without me moving the pedal in any way. The moment I push the pedal a little, to 1100rpm or higher, all goes back to normal, and if I lower the RPM to 900 or lower, it  also goes back to normal. The injection unit has been replaced by a new one already, just to make sure, and the first gear issue was unaffected by that big replacement. So, if that ain't it, what could cause that weir RPM issue? It makes sense it is very much related tmy gear box issue, seeing that I have a no-torque moment during acceleration, about exactly when the engine is revving past 1000RPM..

Crazy, like dealing with a ghost. Seems like there must be a Honda forum out there with people that know as much about Hondas as the people here know about MB's.

oh, I am there already, with a 100usd cash bounty for the right answer.. Many tried and failed. We are on our way to buy another CRV today, and I'll transplant  all my new parts to the next car. It's the cheapest way to keep the same model CRV, and not lose my 2-year investment in dozens of parts. Shame I can't take the refurbished engine. It's not allowed in Taiwan to transplant engines..

Wow, transmission rebuilding 101 failure big time. Not flushing cooler lines or getting converter redone everytime.
Have they looked at the unputs ti the transmission, TPS for instance.
I had a custimer's transmission doing  wierd shifts and acceleration if you feathered the throttle at a certaun point. Using live data from a scan tool let me see a spike from the TPS. Replaced TPS, fixed.
Had a big american truck that would kill reverse, after lots and lots of stuffing about, rebuilds and new transmissions. Found it was due to a tow bar wiring fitment and the not so good right hand drive conversion. Seemed to affect quite a few of them, needed a stand alone trans controller.

So dont always just look at the transmission, it takes about 12 inputs to controll the transmission.
1st gear burning out could just be a symptom of something else.
Even a bad ECU.

radiator-new
flushing cooler lines -done
converter- done
TPS -new
NPS-new
selenoids-all new
idle motor-new
co2 sensor-new
throtlle body sensors-new
spark leads-new
ignition unit-new
ECU =replaced 2x and all wires checked and re-attached

The list is much longer, and Ill spare you the rest. Nobody managed to find the error, for over 2 years, countless garages.

Last week someone drove into my car from the side, wrecked the door, the arches and the rocker panel. Rear wheel bent outwards.
While we wait for the insurance to screw us over nice and proper, we have given up, and bought another crv
Today I spent the first 6 hours gutting the car, and transplanting parts.
Tomorrow we'll do another 6 hours.
Yeah, it hurts, and it's a big loss, but this is the end, and a new beginning.
