Nice, 13B. ;-)

That's a very practical car to have. Turbo + manual transmission = fun!
Is the 6.9 going to be a weekend car?

There's only one more thing needed for race cred' and a video needed of some heel toe action.

Then I want to see this by the end of next week  ;D ;D

That's fantastic news Ian and glad it went to a good home. I have been hassling a number of people to buy it and seriously considered it myself. The one issue was the compliance plate or lack thereof according to what the seller told me. To register it in SA it would have needed an engineers certificate and an $800 emission check because of the turbo. I even considered buying it, removing the turbo, getting it registered and then putting it back on! As a 'tourist' import according to the VIN, I assume it has 'complied' but apparently it was up to the importer whether they went to the trouble of having the plate fitted. I felt pretty safe when he said it had child restraint hooks in the rear, but when he looked under the bonnet he couldn't find the compliance plate. I would have used it as my sprint car but kept it pretty much as is.

Which leads me to my new ride that I will pick up next week from Sydney. It is a 1983 500 SEC which seems a little excessive since I had been thinking 190! I will give more details once I pick it up but I know the car well from the last 2 owners and a very well cared for car. I was helping a mate out at the Phillip Island historics and he said "you should buy my old car"......... and eventually I thought why not, lifes too short. I am yet to see the original paperwork but apparently it was ordered in Adelaide through the Benz dealer with a full AMG workover - mods costing as much as the purchase price of the car! My mate used it in the east coast targa to good effect and it should serve as a nice driver come standard sprint car........ at least until I have enough time to put together a serious sprint car.  More details to follow. I plan to drive back via Oscars place and check out his rides and make it a road trip with my 4yo.

Yeah the compliance papers were in amoungst the service history which came with the car.  Looks like its easly life (that is up to 100,000km) it was regularly serviced in Melbourne from a MB dealer.  So, at least for registering in Victoria it all looks legit.  I even have in the paperwork there an actual build date for the car, 23 Oct 1984.  This is of particular importance because that therefore makes 24 Oct 2009 the date the car is 25 years old and can then go on club plates, which are emissions and engineering cert exempt... just rock up to VicRoads office with a RWC.  Sandown on May 10 it'll be making its track debut.

Nice find a good used 500 SEC - I read somewhere that the 500 engine was slightly more responsive than the 560 and is the choice of the two.  The 560 makes more power on paper but is held back a little by its low octane fuel requirement and catalytic converters, or so I've heard.

Oscar the buscuit tin is probably full capable of an insane power-side like shown in the video, in fact its not far off this video:

Holy cow, that was like a six second 0-100 but the speedo needle just kept going just as fast after that.  He must have recalibrated the speedo.. ;D..just kidding.  That was impressive.

Ian, do you know about the russian benz club site with the vin decoder? There is a link to it on the ozbenz site. I plugged in the VIN that was in the Ad for the car and it came up with all sorts of details, like the 'tourist' delivery, build date, options etc.

Yes I had a look at that site, this car has a very comprehensive and common-sense set of options so whoever bought it originally knew what they were ordering.  This seems to be one of the few early 190Es with electric windows, but at the same time to keep the complexity down, they went against SLS.  Good move on both counts IMHO.

Oscar, I'm pretty sure SELfor50's race car accelerates at a similar rate these days.

Has SELfor50 done a conversion to an alloy block V8 such as a 560/500? I notice he has an alloy P/S pump and late distributor!
