126 500 purchases

hi guys,
now I'm really liking the 126 300 i was after some interior parts. so i went to look at a '1987 500se' for a parts car. i turned up and it was a pre update (<1985) so little interior was useful. however, it was a 500 so i made an offer and got the car.
TJ and Major Tom gave a hand last week and today i pulled the engine. pleasantly i found it was a 560 m117.968 HV (hooch verdichtung) engine. unless I'm wrong, this is the 10:1 300hp (220kw) monster 126 engine. so I'm pretty happy with that.

after i bought this 500 and before i pulled it, i subsequently found another 500 ('1984') for sale. although id just bought a 500, i could tell this was not an 1984 and went to check it out. a very rusty update model that supposedly had a lot of money spent on the engine 2 years ago. an offer was made (respectfully low) and surprisingly i ended up with another 500 (two in a week!). as i checked the car out today with TJ, we found it was another high compression ECE m117.985 engine - 5L 265hp (200kw).

so tonight I'm pretty happy even though i currently have no use for these beasts. the 560 engine now sits next to the 6.9 blocks - a V8 graveyard of sorts!

Good find nathan, they are great reliable motors of classic design and no doubt you will find a future project for them to be dropped into.
Had to laugh out loud when I read this as I'm as bad as you when it comes to prospecting for these gems, there is a certain romance in rusty iron.
I wasn't going to report my latest acquisition but this week on a long boring drive back from melbourne I drove past a
German wreckers and notice a thistle green 116 a some description, it was was on the other side of a major highway and I was at two minds  on going back to investigate. Anyway I did and found a 1978 280SEL  it had been for sale for over 6 months at a not unreasonable $2,500 but with no takers had been destined for dismantling later that week.
I made an offer which was countered by man behind the counter, I was still 1 hours drive from home ground so I agreed to the price if they were to deliver it the same day and tbat they would  refrain from removing any choice parts before delivery.

Later that afternoon this new lady arrived on the back of very rough looking carrier, the driver name was Mohomad, very nice chap. He was curious as to why I would want this  old piece of sh##t. I preceded to tell him and then opened the garage door and showed him why, he was blow away by the recently acquired Gold 6.9. I think he went away with a bit more of an appreciation for the old classics.

this 280 turned out a real gem, looks like a well looked after one owner with full sheepskin covers hiding a pristine interior, the panels are all original with not one spot of rust anywhere. The paint is incredibly in very good order. The motor is stuffed, it has water mixed into the sump oil .caramel "milkshake"

interior seems to be unmarked due to the sheep skin covers
The trim also in excellent order, must have been kept garaged most of the time

Looking to replace the current motor with one from a 1977 280E sedan in pretty good order, are there any differences between the two, or will it behave the same as the original motor. Carl any personal knowledge there.
Cheers

RD, u r a champ. that  looks like a really nice car. great looking interior as you say. that MB tex just never dies.  its always amazing how proficient you can get at dismantling these things. i had a couple of people the other day (not car people) suggest i was going off the reservation with all these purchases.  i think with probably  a dozen wrecks over the years, i haven't made money or got my worth out of any of them.  sure there are easier ways to make money but i just have fun (sometimes not!) pulling these things apart and if i hadn't got into it i wouldn't have met fine fellows like TJ, MT (ok, fellow isn't the right word for him), and other .org'ers from other states like RD.

I had to call TJ in for a hand today. the unpowered electric seats were wanted out of this car.  there is evidently no manual release for them so if you can't power them, you are in for trouble trying to access the 2 10mm bolts on the rear, and the 2 10mm bolts on the front.  i.e. you can't move the chair any other way!  The way we got them out was to remove either the accessible bolts (one seat was the front bolts only, the other was the rear bolts only). tilt the chair slightly, then get access to the plugs for the power seat switches which are underneath the seat (under the cushion).  you could then plug a battery directly to them and with trial and error power the seats either forward or back and access the other bolts.  so the seats were removed and that was that, good bye to this soldier of rome.  the body was garbage so aside form engine and some interior bits, thats all that came off.the bundts i put on it to roll it out were imitation intras and not worth keeping.  not surge when ill get around to the gen 2 500, as its registered might keep it intact for a while.

Haha,

These two cars were definitely a good find. They'll be getting harder to find as time goes by, and the high comp euro engines ought to be saved.

This has got me enthused, so I'm now working on getting the 560 running again. I should expect to have the intake manifold fitted by the end of this weekend.
