I've been driving the 280 SE the last few days, disgracefully its first outing since the concour. I've had the car 10 months and done a whopping 1,300 kms so far..... I have to say, that car is so nice to drive. I've done about 250kms since last Thursday and it is feeling great. Only problem seems to be small intermittant misfire at idle, a legacy of lack of use I suspect and added encouragement for me to perform the "Big service" which I have not had a chance to do as yet. I had a very nice trip back from Berwick along the Monash Freeway on Friday evening, took some pics along the way.
Regards,
Carl.

Whoa, Carl I love that first pic. 8) 8)
With so little use, the misfire and seeing the fuel gauge empty made me wondered whether you've ever filled 'er up since you've had it ::) 10 month old fuel, that's your problem. ;)
I love seeing pics of our cars out and about.
250k's in 1 week?!?! that is outrageous - that could almost be a record for someone who uses their 116 as a daily driver! think of the xwx's
the top pic is nice. i dont have a nice fancy slr like some photographers we know on the board, so i end up with warp speed pics if taken at night on the fly

Those are very impressive pics Carl.

I'm sure I've done at least a thousand in a week before, but then I'm insane and I don't have XWX's (yet). :D
Nathan, that pic of yours seems quite ominous.
Tim
Hi Oscar,
Yes, that tank of fuel was new the morning of the concour, I wanted to run it out before I filled it again. The fuel filter is also on my list of "Must do" items for the big service. One thing, I'm quite surprised by the cars fuel consumption, it's better than the W126 with Kjet. I have done 500 kms so far with no reserve light as yet (Though it must be close!) and mostly town driving apart from the one run down the freeway to Berwick (About 100kms round trip).
Nathan and TJ, the pic was taken with a Leica C-lux2, no fancy SLR here! Unfortunately the XWX's will be only 1/4 worn by the time they are hard and cracked. I have three cars that run them and the miles just are not being put on them unfortunately. The only car that has any hope of wearing them out is the W126, though after 11,000 kms in two years, they don't appear to be more than 20% worn.
Nice pic Nathan too!
Regards,
Carl.
Nice pics.
My W116 mileage record is 1495km in one day. And I've done that twice - with a trailer in tow. I've done trips of 600 to 800km per day so many times I can't count them. And yes, after a two-year folly with the W140, I am back to using the 280SE as a daily driver - and its brilliant.
K-jet, and I get 610km on a tank of open road, 580 in daily commute.
Hey Carl, Long time no speak.
Did you ever fix your miss at idle here? Mine has always had a slight miss at idle and it never changed, recently however I've got an ugly idle and am trying to track it down and searching the forums, hence coming across this old thread. Anyway will post my problem up elsewhere and see if anyone can help.
cheers, Damian

Damian,
How are you? Well I hope.
Yes, I did fix the idle, but I suspect it's not relevant to your car as I think yours in K-Jetronic? In my case, I added two hose clamps to the MAP sensor line to the inlet manifold. I was always suspicious the car was ingesting false air around these connections. Although no clamps from what I can tell are meant to be fitted on this line officially, doing so solved the slight miss at idle immediately.
With the K-Jetronic W126 280 SE, I chased a slightly rough idle and fixed it by very carefully tweaking the idle mixture. Initially, with the gas analyser with a Lambda of 1.0 the car ran fine, but there was a slight miss at idle. A very slight enrichment fixed it. I put it down to the engine just being happier with that mixture.
There are so many things to consider with a rough idle on an M110 with K-jetronic, I would check the following next time in order:
valve adjustment
cam timing
air filter
ignition system check over, cap, rotor, plugs, leads, coil, ballast resistor, connections, ECU.
control pressure of fuel system
fuel filter
warm up regulator
fast idle
false air/vacuum line leaks including injector seals
injector spray pattern
differential fuel delivery
exhaust leak
Still rough?
Set car on fire.
Hie Carl
I also have that slight misfire. In the past 2 yrs I have done virtually everything from replacing ignition system (leads, coil, dist.cap, rotor etc..) to overhauling the solex (no vacuum leaks) but to no avail.
At least it idles smoothly and not felt when driving. I'll be adjusting the valves this coming Thursday but I'm skeptical there may be a connection here.
