Did you get any parts out of that car before you sold it? Did you keep those rims?

Kept the 3 1/2 Ronal rims, sold them to a friend in Florida for $200.

I also need to ask, how did the car end up in that state? Was it an accident? Rust? Or was someone over ambitious with their creation?

It was an accident, following a 1990s restoration that attempted to make the car look like the one on the show "Dallas".   They even removed the 450SL logo and added a glue on plastic 560SL and a high-mounted stop lamp.  Rich people do strange things with cars.  Here is a picture of an identical car as it should be.

The accident was severe enough to snap the brake rotor in half and tore the caliper off the spindle, sheering a 4" X 1" chunk out of the caliper itself.  Interesting that no glass was broken and the doors hung perfectly.  MB quality.  The front subframe was torn partially away and the frame crumpled in three spots, the deepest one was 3" behind the firewall under the passenger footwell.

This car is identical in regards to original color and equipment.
