Just watched 2nd episode of "The Grand Tour" Amazon's remake of BBC's "Top Gear". Shocked for a moment as I thought a 116 was being used for target practice  but all was well as it was only a 123. Can't think why the 123 is so popular here you would not believe the spares available, restoration specialists and general help plus of course the high sale prices asked and apparently achieved. Never understood why as it is simply a cheap version of the 116 but do agree with Clarkson taking a machine gun to it.

There were a heck of a lot more W123 cars made as compared to W116 cars.  They're still relatively cheap to come by in varying conditions, and there are still plenty out there, so maybe that's why they chose a W123?  Just guessing.

Maybe so but they are really popular here, like the 107, and go for a good price unlike the 116 but we are getting there.

They made something like 2.7 million W123s.

Did they really? I would have thought then that they would have been cheap plus the fact that they are not that special or interesting. Understand the 107 here as sports cars are a class thing, specially in the MB club, and they tend to look down on everyone. Still stand with Clarkson's opinion.

Some of the W123's in Europe are selling at OK prices because the ones on the continent that are not rotten are getting rare, even after 2.7 million builts. Mind you, it's especially the 300TD  that is sought after. You'll be hard-pressed to sell a 200D at a good price.

The absolute majority of those millions of used W123's went to northern Africa over the last 25 years and will never leave that place.
That suction-effect has always been massive.. big enough to raise prices in Germany!
