That was interesting to read about Adelaide drivers. I think they are getting better but still enough idiots that speed up to block you out etc. etc.  The biggest contrast for me was working for a while in Midlands UK where I found drivers to be super polite, sort of a 'well we all need to work together if we are going to get there the quickest' and found coming back here in 2001 to feel the road was filled with mentally kindergarten aged people! Coming back it felt like our roads were super super wide with lots of lanes though.

I don't see the problem with no major highway right through the city centre, and it seems most citys are working on ring roads that is sort of what they designed from scratch. From my old surveying studies I believe that plans for 'square of roads' and parklands was there before they started doing anything. But only inner rings and never got to the outer rings that were planned. In the 60's they had this 'MATS' plan I think they called it and either bought up land or put  covenants on land that it had to be sold to the govt. when they needed it, which allowed for huge transport corridors. Change of govt. at some stage saw too much money tied up in this land and it was all sold off. Shame political terms only go for 3 years.

They are starting to work with an underpass and then working towards a nonstop North South corridor, but at the rate they are working I will never see it! Adelaide has a pretty small pop. and not really growing so I don't think it is such a big deal, but if ever we do start growing, like what I saw in Brisbane last weekend, we will really be in the shit transport wise! As long as they protect my beloved Adelaide Hills roads Patrick refers to, and keep their speed cameras away for early Sunday morning blasts, I don't really care that much what else they do!!
