Unseasonably cold here in Vancouver right now, thought I'd show you guys in the Southern Hemisphere and warmer spots what you are "missing"...

Great photos Daniel, very artistic, Do you need to run snow tyres in winter?

daantjie

Thanks Peter.  Here in Vancouver normally we have a mild winter so you can get away with "all season" ones for the most part. Pretty much everywhere else in Canada they are mandatory in winter. -50 C with wind chill in certain areas is not uncommon...

Even with the snow on it, I can tell you properly painted the black bar under the 6.9.  This detail is almost always missed.

I bought the car already with that black underline under the "6.9" so maybe they came like that?  Maybe a US spec thing?

I guess it has been cold in my neck of the Canadian woods as well recently, but I'm not there to worry about it, lol; I'm having my annual (long) vacation in Thailand, where I spotted this clean 280S with 500SEL in front - I've seen other models of Mercedes sitting here before as well so the occupant is either a collector or has visiting friends who are also owners:

they came that way as does the the bar on the 450SEL, but they fade over time and most do not repaint them to their full original glory.

Does that apply to the SE as well? Mine has no sign of one neither did the replacement boot lid I got that came with all the chrome as well. Does it actually look good or is it just because it is original that matters? Can see on a dark colour that it would lift the chrome off the surface but that wouldn't work on a light colour. And what about the numerals were they ever treated the same?

If you google images for the emblems you will see that most of them have the black line at least for W116.  I'm not sure other chassis did the same thing.  I dont think W108 did it.

This is interesting to me! I just migrated to Brisbane from Calgary last month. From what I gather there is a 60 to 70 degree Centigrade difference in temperature between the cities last week! I had 3 different w116's .... 450 SEL's all of them and they started well in the severe cold. In stark contrast to these were my two Diesel W123s which were TERRIBLE cold starting in Winter! I went to ridiculous ends to tun these old Warhorses in the bitter Calgary Winters. They all paid a heavy price in corrosion too, as the roads had hideous quantities of salt on them. I am astonished at how clean the engine bays of almost all vehicles here in the absence of road grunge and salt!
Be kind to the old girl mate!

Indeed West Coast cars (lower Mainland of BC) are normally very solid due to the lack of road salt here.  Any car from the prairies and out East, be aware, it will probably be like cottage cheese underneath :o

Okay, but don't you have problems with the salt air causing corrosion in the lower mainland?
