My car ticked over the 180,000km mark last night. Averaging 5787km per year.

Scary to think of the roughly 36,000L of fuel (at 5km per L) which has been consumed.

It is also interesting to note that my car was originally purchased 12 May 1977 for DM50203.20 (A$19,500).

Pfft. 180,000km!  Barely run in.

But the fuel, that's about $60,000 worth

I know I don't like to think of how long it will take me to get it run in

Thats assuming the odometer was at Zero untill this month, once apon a time fuel was dirt cheap.

I think i calculated that my 6.9 had consumed about 69487.5 litres of fuel in its life. Now thats a decent carbon footprint for one car.

We should get little black balloon stickers for every 10,000 liters of fuel consumed and stick them on the front guards like the WW II fighters did.

Or if we want to pretend to be good greenies, I could see if we can get some new boot badges made - something like 1.6 VVTI TD GX Hybrid. Would that score greenie points?

Actually, my earliest recollection of the price of petrol, I do remeber many moons ago when I was much younger noticing a sign at a servo' in Sydney saying 26c a litre.  I can't remember the year but I wonder how the price compared with average wages then and how the $1+ whatever the price is now compares to today's avg wage.

In any case, $60k, I'm going to add that is roughly seasonally adjusted.


I just need a sign on the boot similar to one I saw at a coal fired power station which they have near a highway in clear view of their cooling towers to appease the greens .  It says something like "It's water vapour, not pollution".

In my younger days, i used to drive an evil american v8 engined vehicle around - It was converted to LPG. The price of LPG was only 18c per litre, so it only cost less than $20 a week to drive!!!!! The scary thing though, was that it was ONLY 5 years ago!  Look at the price now!

Before the oil crisis, apparently it was only a few bucks for a full tank.

My earliest recollection was around 1976 when I used to fill my HQ Monaro V8 with around $9 worth of leaded super for 75litres, which equates at around 12c a litre.
My weekly wage at the time was $120 and rent was $40 for a 2bedroom apartment at Coogee beach in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

I feel embarrassed to say that petrol was 41 cents an imperial Gallon (even scarier than the fact that it was purchased in gallons was the fact that a few months earler before decimalisation it was 4 shillings and a penny) when I got my drivers licence in New Zealand at the tender age of 15. That is about 9 cents per litre.

I could only afford to put a dollars worth in at a time but even so that was still about 11 litres.

Mind you the average wage was only $30 or $40 per week.
