What type of engine

The plate next to the VIN number on my 450SL reads 116/107.  I assume that this means that my car has the 116 engine.  I always thought that the 450SL had the 177 engine.  Any thoughts?

If it's a 350SL , 380SL (and maybe 420SL), It will have an M116 engine.

I forgot about 80's 107's :-\

I would've assumed that every 450SL has an M117 ie 4.5L engine   ???

Regardless of year or model there's only one way to be sure what engine is in there and that's to read the engine number stamped into the engine block.  To find that, it's at the rear of the engine up against the firewall on the left hand bank, below the head facing upwards.  Clear as mud??  Just look around there and there'll be a part of the block that extends towards the firewall.  You might need a toothbrush, rag  or something similar to clear any crud that's resting over the numbers but the first three numbers will tell you what the engine is.
ADDED - and the next lot of three numbers will tell you what version of that engine it is.

What year is the car and post any photos of the engine you have plus that 116/107 plate.  If your having troubles reading the numbers, a few nitpickers like myself should be able to tell what the engine is by photos.
