Vacuum Diaphragms

I have heard that the vacuum diaphragms are available as a separate item from the assemblies they work in.

As I will be opening up all my doors to fix rattles, lubricate, rust proof and check for vacuum leaks (The central locking on the 6.9 is much slower than on my old 450) I would like to replace all the rubber bits as a matter of course.

Is there anyone who sells a "Car Load of Rubbers" as distinct from all the related plastic bits and of course not the prophylactic type either. ;D

are you talking aobut replacing the rubbers in the blue locking mechanisms??  as far as i was aware, i dont think you oculd replace these, you have to do the whole unit?

Hi Nathan,

The Bentley Repair manual talks about the diaphragms being "freely available" but I was trying to find out if anyone new whether this was separately or as a unit.

I think this is what you are looking for. It says "sold out" but probably worth sending them an email. If they have/had them, I'm sure others do. Have you checking the vacuum valves beside the fuse box ?

Here's another source, and some handy hints on fixing it. They also have the height adjustor handles.

Thanks Craig.

Priceless information - I know you said you and your partner work in different countries, I guess it gives you time to surf.

True ! She was in Turkey on Thursday and Friday, but different city, so I didn't get to see her. I MIGHT see her when I am in Germany next month, but I know she has to go to London, Poland, Hong Kong, Kenya, and South Africa over the next couple of weeks, so who knows....................

I purchased 6 off UNI-DI brand, Universal Diaphragm rubber replacement units from the USA for all my doors, cost was about $7.50US each, plus about $20 freight. The fuel unit tested OK, as did the boot unit. I can lock and unlock the doors about 12 times in a row so I think it is basically OK, but left parked the locking system now lasts a little over 3 hours, so I still have a small leak somewhere.

Thanks for the info.

The Maw Solutions link no longer works and they are no longer list the vacuum diaphrams on their site, so presumably no longer sell them.

Don't think you will get much better than twelve in a row.

Does the three hour limit apply if you leave the car unlocked?

If yes the leak is some where common to both lock and unlock, one way valve, vacuum tank, driver's door etc., if no the leak is in the locking circuit.

My locking leaks down quickly if locked but lasts a week if left unlocked.

I recall reading somewhere in the tech manual that says it should lock/unlock 10-12 times on the vacuum that the tank holds....if you are getting twelve, that's in spec.  Of course things only lasting 3 hours is not.....the longest I've ever tested mine is a week at the airport....everything unlocked smoothly when I returned after 1 week, so it held vacuum that long.
