Thought I knew, and then I got confused.. What cars were equipped with Solex carbs, and which ones with a Pierburg?

floyd111

Guess this is indeed a tough one? :o

None of the W116 cars were ever equipped with a Pierburg. Always the Solex 4A1.  :)  It's the mechanical fuel pump on the carbureted engines that was Pierbburg, and on cars with emissions the diverter valve for the secondary air injection and the vacuum amplifiers were also Pierburg.

Mine had a Pierburg carb when I got it, looks very similar to a Solex. But I took it off as it was warped beyond repair at the base. Currently have a Weber 38 on my car

And what year is your 280S? You presume that your carb was the original one when you got it?

s class

I really, really doubt any 116's were originally equipped with Pierburg carbs.  I have most of the tabellenbuchen from the 60's, 70's and 80's and I've never seen it mentioned.

Mine is a 1978 280S with 4 speed manual. I presume that's the original carb, its what was in there when I got it

Pierburg made various parts for Solex, and sometimes there were hard metal parts made by Pierburg with their name on it.  That doesn't mean it's a Pierburg carburetor.  Likewise, our headlights are made by Bosch right?  Well, just because they're fitted on a Mercedes doesn't meant that they're made by Mercedes.

No THAT I know for a fact. Been gathering solex carb parts for a long time, and half the time you get Pierburg parts.

Then apply this mentality to the Solex carburetors.  It's one in the same.
