Oil filter for M110 engine

Hi guys,

I am (finally) starting to get to work on my 1980 280SE, first job is an oil and filter change. Can anybody (especially a Perth-based member) recommend any particular oil filter which I should use?

I haven't taken the casing off or opened anything up to get a part number or description at this stage - hoping to get everything done in one go. Any ideas how long this procedure would take?

Also the car was fitted with an immobiliser of some sort when I bought it but I haven't been able to locate the immobiliser in the engine bay (I am planning on removing it). As I have not had the car up on stands yet I haven't had a good look from underneath. Any pics of the underside of the engine bay would be greatly appreciated!

I like to get them from the Dealers, but you can get a Hengst filter from Lintrex in Bentley/Osborne Park (weekdays).

You'll need to make sure you get the washer and o-ring kit with the filter.

Then, I'd check out the oil change procedure in the Workshop Manual Library.

I've not changed a filter on an M110 before. It should be as simple as dropping the filter bowl (undo the long bolt) from underneath the engine, cleaning it out, and inserting the new cartridge with fresh oil wiped on the rubber parts (including the bowl o-ring).

It is a very good idea to fill the bowl with fresh oil, allowing it to soak into the new filter cartridge, before fitment. This will allow the oil to flow sooner.

I also like to make sure that the filter bowl is absolutely spotless before refitting.

Thanks Tim I will definitely try Diesel Motors first. Any idea on the price?

I have had a thorough look through the Workshop Manuals - great source of info so I am pretty confident about doing the procedure but there are always those small tips which are passed on between enthusiasts and not written about in the manuals!

No worries.

For the M116/M117 they're around $30-$40 from memory... It may be cheaper for the M110.

The M110 uses the same filter as the M116/7.  I pay about ZAR 35 (less than $5) for them at the MB dealer here.

Imparts have a branch in Osborne Park, they should be much cheaper than that, if it's the same filter as for a M117 then I bought the Hengst ones here for about $7 from memory, they come with all gaskets and copper washers required.

Thanks for your advice everyone. FYI Lintrex in Welshpool (Tennant Street) sells the Hengst filters with washers and O-ring for $12. Part number is E121H D01 for those who are interested.
