before i say any more, yes PB i will be scrapping the car - just not for the time being!

my donor 126 500sel (for the Gwagen) has had some screechy noises to be technical on first attempting to start it.  i thought i would remove the starter motor myself to save some coin and take it to the auto electricians.
after 90 minutes of quite difficult and hand burning work (probably wise to let the car cool down!), i got the starter out.
i had the two 450 engines out back and pulled a starter off one.  the numbers match identically which is interesting. admittedly the three digits above the main code differs, but the main bosch number is the same, despite the fact there must be 10+ years separating these cars. as i intend to rebuild the 500 completely, i saw no point in putting on the used 450 starter at this point although took it to the auto electricians if he needs to salvage parts.
anyhow,
thought this was interesting and i wonder if the starter is universal to any other models?
regards

you crackers voted? hilarious oscar! its the first post in a while having been book reading for an expensive course (paramedics i think have an EMST equivelant i think?)...if you are post9ing for the first time, maybe you will share my confusion at a few of the things you need to fill in!

anyhow, PB, my cheque is in the mail - or should i forward it to a dermatologist who will probably have to cut off all your fingers due to the likely growths they will get after handling all your cadmium plating!

so, in short, i recognise now that the starter is shared by
the 450, 500, 560 in all their guises
it also looks like the following also shared it
350, 380, 420? is this right - any others?

I think that's got it pretty well covered, P.B. I had no idea the starter motor was the same on all those engines. That's very useful information. 8)
So Nathan, have you fitted one of the 450 starters so that you can drive the car whilst the other unit is being reconditioned, or are you just not driving the car for the duration?

I might have to wear gloves for the first time in years when I make contact with this awesome carcinogen. ;D

What actually caused the starter motor to screetch.

Sometimes it is the starter not pulling it's pinion in completely and only partially engaging and sometimes it is wear on the flywheel teeth themselves.

Interesting about the starter being so widely used across the models.

From what I heard of it, it just wasn't engaging at times. Perhaps a problem with the "Drive" or similar?

P.B., it will be interesting to find out just how expensive the quote will be.

 Bill,
the mechanic suggested it was the bendex (?) or clutch system ?
the teeth  looked alright.
i cant be bothered putting the 450 one in at this point, just going to wait til the original is fully done as its a lot of work to get out!
PB, ill give you a med cert - 80 bucks! Bill will do one for 100 (i want a 20% commission though Bill!) ;)
