got busy removing the motor out of the 123 donor car, totally forget to take any progress photos, but now have the engine/transmission unit out ready for the big clean up before being installed into the Silvergreen sedan

Engine swap progress photos

1. the front motor with transmission attached is out of the donor car 123 series  sedan
2. some of the emission control plumbing being rmoved
3. the exhaust ports free of the constrained manifolds, notice the stainless pipe connected just below each port, this will also be removed.
4. hard at work

The engine mount bracket with the serial number starting with 110 is from the 116 chassis and is identical to the one off the 123 but takes a larger diameter bolt, so I will need to swap these over.

progress

The next 3 pictures show two sets of exhaust manifolds, the top ones with the round hole mounting plate (Aussie emission control) came off the donor car and are similar to the original manifolds.
the bottom ones came off an early Djet 280se (pre " Emission") car.  I will be installing these ones as I will be removing all the rubbish associated with the original emission control.

Update,

found the thermostat not working, water pump seems OK but its a long way in once the engine is back in the car so I will replace that as well.

also the short hose that connects the back of the thermo housing to the bottom radiator pipe very difficult to get to behind the alternator and air con compressor, it was is poor condition and  broke off as I was trying to remove it.

I recommend  to any one with a 280 should consider changing all the coolant hoses before they deteriorate and fail.

That stubby 42mm ID hose is often referred to as 'the bastard' hose, and its a common failure point.

It's also the single most expensive W116 part, when valued based on weight and size ;)
Per gram, it's more expensive than platinum.

Also, a common leak point, if not tightened properly.

Here in South Africa I'm paying about $130 per metre for that hose at the moment.  But I wouldn't consider using anything other than MB genuine parts in this application.

finally got back to this project,
my son Jarrad came to give to give me a hand installing the replacement motor.
all in a days work, we had to raise it at a very steep angle to get it over the radiator panel, but once cleared it just dropped easily down to the engine mounts.
next weekend reconnect all the pipes and wiring and hopefully it will start.

So does anyone have a section they will sell me?  it's $88 a meter here.  Otherwise I found a regular hose that is a couple mm smaller to use.

Don't skimp.  Pay the money for the genuine article. It will save you a lot of trouble later on.
