Yep! It is worse than expected.  both rear axle are broken.  does anyone have any idea where I can buy re-built or new ones?

Thanks,
Jessie

:o :o :o  Really!!  That's  a shock Jessie.   Where abouts are they broken??  CV joins?    Not sure where to get half shafts from.  Wreckers yards for sure but I haven't found any in the usual online shops.

That's a very unusual problem. It would be interesting to know how they failed etc.

Okay, after a 2nd opinion only my driver side drive shaft is broken!  Should I replace both sides or just replace the driver side?

Just the broken one I reckon if the other one is good. Anyone else??

If the other side is OK, I would just have it's boots replaced as well. It does depend on how the other one failed, though.

I assume the reason they fail is that the CV boot perishes with age and splits.

The oil immediately runs out of the CV joint and as the split on my boot was hidden and in an inner fold it could have been unnoticed if it hadn't happened as I was raising it on a hoist at the moment it split. Driving it without oil would have destroyed it very quickly.

TJ's suggestion of a second hand shaft and reboot the other side. Check your prchased second hand one as it may need to be rebooted as well.

The new "stretchy" boots are a godsend and you can decide whether they are oil or grease filled.

This may be slightly off subject, but I wonder if anyone out there changes the oil in their CV's?  I've done it twice now....it's a little messy and inaccurate, but I take the approach that something is better than nothing.

I have replaced the sealing bands with regular hose clamps....I just slide the bottom edge of the boot off to drain, then press it back on, then slide the top edge off and refill until it starts pouring out....has seemed to work so far. Curious if anyone else has any experience with this...

Problem fixed I purchased drive shafts from Checkers for $220.  With a core return on $72.  I had both side replaced noise is gone!

pez, I generally do service my shafts in a manner similar to what you describe.  But I don't do it often - generally when I buy a new car, I do it when I change all the other fluids.
