My hot tip based on experience was having the wrong exhaust system on the car. Was nice and quiet and you wouldn't have picked a problem but both the front and rear boxes were baffled. Put standard benz resonator and still quiet but huge increase in economy.

Id suspect the carb, it probably hasnt been set up right since rebuild, how experienced was the guy with solex on mercs? Also engine timing would be the other issue, ive recently found that two of my distributors had failed vacuum advances on them, they were shot, check by connecting and disconnecting vacuum to advance unit while you have a timing light on crank marks.or put a spare rubber tube on the vacuum advance unit & suck it watching the dist base plate advance ( take off dist cap & roter etc.)
My 2 cents worth.

There isn't any vac advance at idle so the advance shouldn't change, at least not at idle. Also vac is used to adjust idle speed for A/C compressor load which could confuse things.

Better way.

guys, after i limited the injection pump shoot, the economy has improved, but just a little bit, i am thinking of changing the carburetor for a holley like someone did, or for a holley two barrel.
