i posted this is another topic i had however after a little more resaerch found it may warrent its own topic....
Quotei have a new 2nd hand MPS ready to install to my car the only reason i have not done this yet is cus then it needs tuning.... however given the fact that i have just noticed under high revs my car blows grey smoke and smells like a 2 stroke lawnmower and therefore realised just how rich it is running.... so i am going to put the other MPS cus i figure it has to be better tuned than my broken one surely....

what i do need to know is when i do tune it is it as simple as measuring the exhaust gas under different revs and adjusting the screw on the MPS accordingly....

the smoke is not very thick and is worse when it is cold however the smell is quite rich...... i just assumed this was due to it running rich however after a little more research it appears to me that mayb it might be engine seal allowing oil into the exhaust or something like that..... any advice or help....

this is the last thing i want as my other 280 has a blown head gasket......

also i cant see any residue exiting the exhaust as i put some cardboard down on  my driveway and it got no splatter on it it is just smoke and smell.....

Sounds pretty normal with the sorts of milages we have been talking about.  My 450 D-jet is a little bit fumy and especially so when cold.

It will smell rather rich until its warmed up at the 30+ year old cold start system isn't known to keep the greatest calibration.  Mine revs up to 1300 when cold and then settles down to a normal 800rpm when warm.

There might be a small amount of oil getting past the rings, valve guides and valve stem seals, but this is normal on a high milage engine so expect a puff of smoke on sudden take off (tends to be less noticable on leisurely take-offs) and some blue oil smoke at high revs.

What can be done?

Make sure your oil is in good condition with no additives, use good quality 20W50 oil like GTX2 and change it every 6000km, top it up as needed in between.

Make sure your ignition timing is set right, D-jet it very critical due to the trigger point timing.

Make sure the mixture is set right at the ECU using an exhaust gas analyser.

Make sure all your ignition parts are in top condition (plugs, leads, coil, points, etc.) as a weak spark on 1 or more cylinder and it will still fire but not b a complete combustion, leading to a fumy smelly exhaust.
