Have a 79 280se euro. What is the separate electrical device (it has 4 wires) that is in the same assembly as the elect. fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel accumulator? What does it do? It has a solenoid type connection to the fuel line plumbing.

Does this car have the Webasto block pre-heater?  The Webasto equipment involved an extra pump at the rear by the tank.

It would help if you could post up a photo of the device.

After some more research it seems the device is a (2nd) electric fuel pump made by Hardi that is often used on VW's. A picture is on the web site German Supply.com.  I can only guess that the electrical solenoid/plug connected to the gas line plumbing might have been a metering device or something to do with the starting of the vehicle since the vehiole history has it from the cold climate of Bavaria.
