I HAVE TO REPLACE MY WATER PUMP THIS WEEKEND AND WAS LOOKING IN THE LIBRARY AND FOUND THE FILES ON REPLACING IT.  MY ONLY QUESTION IS ABOUT THE DISTRIBUTOR.  I AN NOT SURE WHETHER IT NEEDS TO COME OFF OR NOT.   I GUESS THE UNDERLYING QUESTION IS IF MY CAR HAS CIS INJECTION AND HOW TO DETERMINE THAT.

Which engine do you have?

Generally the distributor doesn't need removal.

It's the m117 v8 4.5l

1974 450sel

I have a 450SE [1976 model] and it doesn't require removing the dizzie to do the pump.

It would be good to replace the hose when doing this job.

I REALIZE NOW THAT I MUST REMOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR TO CHANGE THE WATER PUMP.  I AM, TO SAY THE LEAST, A NOVICE AT THIS.  WILL THIS MESS UP MY TIMING, AND IF SO HOW HARD WILL IT BE TO FIX THE TIMING?

If you do need to remove the distributor, most say no need to, there are two things to consider, the relationship of distributor body to engine,  and relationship of distributor shaft to distributor body, if you keep these in the same positions timing should be OK.

Take care of the first one by putting a mark on the engine and another on the distributor body so the distributor can go back in the same position.

For the second one, take off the distributor cap and look at the top edge of the distributor where the cap sits, you should see a mark. Now turn the engine to TDC, this is where the 0 degree mark on the crank shaft pulley is directly under the pointer. In this position the rotor arm will either point to the mark or point directly opposite the mark, if it points away rotate the engine one revolution.

Pull the distributor out, do your water pump, put the distributor back using the marks and getting the rotor arm pointing to where it did - and everything should work

THANKS FOR THE INPUT, I WILL HAVE TO WAIT TO TRY NEXT WEEKEND TO TRY.. I WAS HOPING TO AVOID REMOVING IT BUT, THERE IS ONE BOLT DIRECTLY BEHIND IT AND I AM NOT ABLE TO GET A WRENCH OR ANYTHING ON IT.  EVEN IF I DID, I DO NOT BELIEVE THERE WOULDN'T BE ENOUGH ROOM TO REMOVE THE BOLT.

Got the pump off only to realize it probably wasn't the pump but all the crappy hoses and lack of complete gasket.  Anyway, I am replacing all the hoses, but am having trouble with finding a couple of hoses online.  Inparticular the L-shaped hose and the short hose that goes from the top of the water pump to the manifold.
