6.9 head removal

Actually got around to doing some work on the engine yesterday and today, RHS cylinder head mounted complete with cam shaft and exhaust manifold.. The bent hex key worked a treat. Took about 6 hours but that's just me not being in any rush.

Can't do the LHS head until I work out what to do about the fuel line cover/sleeve. Three options, use fire sleeving which is "fleecy lined", comes in silver or a red brown brown colour and is sightly dimpled, about $30 a meter. Second is red "vacuum hose" from the UK, wall is a bit thick but matches the red firewall drains I now have, about $40/meter. Finally have a minimum of 25 meters manufactured to my specs  in any colour at around $20 a meter.

Not keen on the look of fire sleeving, not sure what I'll actually get from the UK and don't want 25 meters.

Maybe you can get the 25 mt and arrange to make up a few sets and sell them off. Get others to send you their hoses and/or fittings.

Considering that going that way at the moment but could be different tomorrow :)  It's a bit annoying I can't just go to one of the hose suppliers and buy something to do the job - apart from fire sleeving which isn't really suitable.

As its just sleeving to contain spray if hose should burst or a fitting develop a leak the left over 23 meters could be sold by length. Same size would suit the suspension pump line.

I predict a lot of people are going to need to replace those fuel hoses in the near future, as they are more than likely original and cracked on most cars (mine included). It might be a wise move to actually purchase that length providing it isn't outrageously expensive and looks original.

Edit: I just saw the quote, it is quite expensive in total. How many metres are required for one hose set?

Around 3 meters for the fuel hoses and the hydraulic pump line.

Tired of dithering about looking for a suitable material for the fuel hose covers so today I went and bought lengths of smooth wiring conduit.

It's black and looks exactly the same as the original covering. Three meters of 18 mm ID will do both fuel hoses and the hydraulic pump line. Total cost was $4.50.

Also bought 2 meters of 25mm ID for the power steering pump line and possibly A/C low pressure hose.

All the other materials had disadvantages, too thick, ugly or too long to get and I wanted to get on with the job. I know it's not ideal and will go hard and brittle like the old stuff but at least it looks original ;)

Covered fuel hoses and heat shield plate are now installed, next is LHS cylinder head.

Is this a flexible rubbery conduit?  I'm not sure we get the same stuff here - could you post a picture?  Thanks

Not rubber but some kind of PVC, assured it is OK in engine compartment but time (and heat) will tell

Uploaded some pics here.

Good, pleased it passes w116org scrutineering ;)

In return can I have a couple of pics of your (anyone) fuel lines where they rise up and curve over, mine splay out in a very non M-B manner.

Thanks, will try and "correct" my fuel lines.

Great looking material Koan.

Mine are intact but very brittle.

However by the time the aircleaner goes on there is little that is visible - but I know - one of us will see it immediately if it isn't corect.... ;D

Five hours with helper today setting "basic position" of valve train. Not difficult but time consuming even with a Go-NoGo gauge.

Getting the rocker and shim out unloads the adjuster and up it pops to maximum height, put a in the new shim and load up the adjuster again and wait for it to settle which can take two or three minutes.

Then another hour fighting with the inlet manifold and EGR pipe but that's in now. I gave the inlet gaskets a coat or two of Hylomar from a spray can, which I hope will prevent any water leaks.
