Since I'm going to be replacing the rear main seal in my 450SE, I think I'll change out the motor mounts as well. Has anyone attempted this ? How much of a job is changing out the mounts?

Changing the engine mounts on a 450 is pretty straight forward, but it requires jacking up the engine after unbolting the single large bolt from both mounts.

Then it's a matter of unscrewing the two small bolts fixing the mounts to the crossmember. Access is very limited under there, but it is much more difficult on a 6.9.

True that.. just make sure you got a lever bar and a thick long screw driver..
Screw driver to line up the holes and get the bolts in.. and lever bar if you need to lever / move the engine around to line the holes up.
Took us about 1-1.5hrs to line the fukrs up on the 690 transplant.  :-[

Has anyone every changed the engine shocks? Figured that I should  while the transmission is out and we are moving the engine all about for motor mount replacement.

I've changed my engine shocks when i changed over all other rubber parts.

I cant say for certain the difference as i did it all at once, but after the work was complete you no longer feel engine vibration in the car at all, no matter how much the engine thrashes around in its mounts - which it does with extreme driving.

I guess changing the shocks is a good idea. My engine mounts and shocks are 35 years old and must be shot by now. Is it as easy to change the shocks as it is the motor mounts?

Big_Richard

very easy to change the shocks.

dont throw away the washers on the top and bottom side that are used for securing them, they are way overpriced to purchase new, i found out the hard way ;)

Do replace the rubber buffers on each end of the shocks if you can though.
