What Is The Name Of This Dark Brown Color?

This is my all time favorite color of the W116 and seems to only be available in 1980. What is the name of this shade? It seems to be a dark (almost black) non-metallic brown.

The easiest way is to check the paint code stamped on the options plate of the car.

Otherwise, go here : Link - and then click on "Farbtabellen", then click on "W 116".  This gives you a colour chart, with indication of the years of availability of each colour.  In most cases, clicking on the name of the colour will take you to a page showing sample cars in that colour.

I would guess that the colour you are after is DB480 "manganbraun".

I got these pictures on the internet, so I haven't seen the options plate or know the VIN numbers.

I looked at that site and I think I agree that my favorite color is DB480 Manganbraun, though it looks lighter in those pictures than these cars, but it is probably lighting. The cars in the pics above don't look metallic. I think having DB480 Manganbraun and DB470 Coloradobeige would look nice in a two tone. I want to do a set of seats and door panels in two tone saffron and tobacco brown.

Looking at other cars that are DB480 Manganbraun, it seems to be only slightly darker than Milanbraun and is metallic. I am thinking that these cars are actually DB479 Moorbraun, listed as a W123 color, not a W116 color, but might have been special order and was available in 1979 and 1980.

there is a w116 in perth i saw a couple days ago with this colour combination, it also has the chrome wheel covers on steel wheels. Its very 70's and suits the car well.

I know the color code now! It's DB479 Walnut Brown/Moorbraun for sure. I looked up the VIN number on a 1980 300SD that was for sale in this color. I actually would have bought the car if it had a sunroof. I've noticed that the 1980 model year 300SDs tend to have rust issues. The 1978 and 1979 model years always seem to lack rust. Maybe 1980 was a bad year for the metal. 1980 model year cars also tend to lack sunroofs, I've noticed. It looks like DB479 was available in 1979, 1980, and 1981, but not an official W116 color (listed as a W123 color).

Yesterday I bought a DB479 Walnut Brown 300SD! Only it has been repainted in DB040 Black, so I will need to change it back to its original color, especially since the clear coat is peeling off..

Gentlemen,

This is the color of my 1980 300 SD.  Walnut Brown, I get many compliments on the color but it is a real bitch to match.  I had to get the A Pillar trim pieces repainted.  They ended up mixing an old Chrysler color and using a PPG paint scanner to get the right color for my car.

I am the proud owner of a 1980 300 SD Turbo Diesel W116.  I found the vehicle in Palm Desert California in 2006.  I have gradually restored the vehicle mechanically and appearance wise back to original OEM.

Unfortunately my 1980 300SD was repainted in black which is now has peeling clear coat, but I want to paint it back to the original Walnut Brown. From what I hear you can't get a decent repaint for less than $2,000 USD and that's IF the car needs no bodywork and is stripped and ready to paint, so it may be a while before that happens.

I would think the original color would be available from Glasurit, Spies-Hecker, etc. At least it's not metallic. I actually want to do a two-tone paint job with Colorado Beige from just below the door handles down with matching pinstriping. I also want the seats to be two-tone saffron and tobacco. I wonder if World Upholstery would make a set of two-tone seat skins for me. The door inserts would also be tobacco with the rest of the interior in saffron.

I believe in the US the dealers called that color "stay around brown".  ;D

Glad to see you rebooted.  I still have those Euro bits so let me know if you want 'em.

Hi! Yep, I got me another 300SD. I am happier with the darker shade (though the car is currently black with peeling clear coat but I will eventually repaint it to the original color). I'm going to add Euro options to this car as well. I will send a PM.
