Penta/other wheel picture thread

So, simple enough, if you have a pic of a w116 with Pentas, post it! AMG, Ronal, any of them. I've found a few in the gallery and stuff, but they're the deep dish ones. I'd like to see if someone has a pic with the more shallow style or something. If you can post the size and offset while your at it, that'd be great.

While we're at it, maybe take this time to post pics of some of the alternative wheels you've found and put on your w116. We all know what Bundt's and the hubcaps look like, so lets see some other styles. It'd be nice if we could have a collection of these for people to reference to when they wanna swap/upgrade wheels.

a swap is not synonomous with an upgrade! ;)
for pentas on a 116, look no further than WGBs AMG 6.9.  some pics are on this old post

lol I don't know why I put those two words next to each other. haha

That AMG is unbelievably sharp looking. Those are the style Pentas I would like to acquire idealy. However, I see the slightly shallower dish ones come up on ebay more often, and they're usally more in my price range. I'd like to see how those look on these cars. For instance, these wheels...

Those are pretty nice looking wheels, and they're pretty much in my price range, and according to an offset calculator, they'd fit nicely into the w116 wheel well and fill it out nicely. I just wanna see if the lack of the deep dish is gonna affect the look drastically.

Oh and props on the 15in bundts! As much as I like the look of the regular bundts, they look so tiny sometimes. I don't care for huge wheels, but I feel like these cars can look night/day with the right size rim, and the pics i've seen of the 15in bundts look like they do that perfectly. They fill the fender out just right.

The description says offset 11, but the numbers on the hub say "e42".

If the deep ones fit perfectly, then how can the shallow ones also be right?

Ooh, good point. So is there a good chance the guy measured his rims wrong and that they don't indeed have 11 offset? I had the same thought about why the deep ones would have the same offset as the more shallow ones, but I figured it was just something about the wheels construction.

MB_Mike

black450SEL is right. Those are an offset of 42 not 11.

Those are also a later style where the spokes are raised and wouldn't look as nice on a W116.

I think you are on to something looking for Ronal R9's or early style AMG road wheels. Just to help you along with your search, ATS (Germany), RONAL (Germany) and PENTA (U.K.) are some of the companies that made the style wheel commonly refered to as "Pentas".

"AMG" stamped wheels are appropriately called road wheels and made by ATS.

You are most likely looking for 8x16 ET 11. The offset seems to be what gives the "dish" look. The higher the offset the flater the face.

Those ET42 wheels listed are for the W201/W124 etc, so they're not suitable for the 116. They are the flatter looking ones.

It is not easy to measure offset in practice. If any ebay seller advises that they personally measured it, I would be willing to be that they don't even know how the offset is measured.

The wheels on my car are English "Penta" 8x16 ET11 and fit and work perfectly.

If ET30 (6 1/2) is correct for W116, how can ETs that range from 11 to 42 also be correct? For wider rims, is the extra width accommodated on the inside or the outside? While the rear won't matter much, I see a real possibility of the front tyre rubbing against the mudguard (fender) flare when turning, especially across a gutter or spoon drain, like turning into your driveway.  I have that problem occasionally with the 350SE that wears 14 x 6 1/2 factory alloys, as it sits a little lower in the front that the 280SE (the motor is slightly heavier, and the springs may have sagged slightly over the last 35 years).

AMG only reduced the ET in their wheels such that the inward movement of the wheel was 5mm (from memory). I would imagine it is easier to roll the wheel arches to fit wider tires than rub part of the steering.

ET up to 42 are not "correct" but may fit in that they are not obstructed by anything.

The ET values are in mm so we are not really talking huge changes, especially when the width of a tire may go from 205 or 215 to 225mm.

I have to say you can't go past 14" rims for flying effortlessly over speed bumps.
Anyhow, my alternates;
CSA penta look-a-likes, made in Adelaide Australia
15 x 7, unkown offset, but around 17 i think (personally measured ;D ) They're all stacked in the shed awaiting refurb.  They fit fine and are flatter than the deep dish type, but I'd prefer the deeper type.  But these were cheap and attached to a $35 wreck so I'm not complaining

Fondmetal, made in Italy.
17 x 8.5 ET13 with Pirelli P Zero Nero 235/40ZR17.  Rock hard over bumps, only used on the track car, but fantastic grip like you wouldn't believe

Remotec, made in West Germany.
Front 16 x 8 ET23, 225/50/16 Falken Digneo
Rear 16 x 9 ET14, 235/50/16 Pirelli P6000.
My favourite of the lot.  Nice and phat and rides well.  Good grip too.  They were on the 350 but now stored whilst I use up all the 14" rubber I have on hand.

Oscar, I like those Remotec's.  The offsets sound like they would work really well too on a W116.
