Noisy speedo... grease, oil or replace?

I've had a noisy speedo for ages (whirr, whirr), but during the colder months it gets louder.
I would like to inspect it and perhaps lightly grease or oil.
Firstly, to inspect, is it necessary to remove the steering wheel?
And secondly, is any preferred lubricant advisable?

Advice or thoughts much appreciated.

Yep,experienced the same problem until cable warmed up after driving her being only noisy in COLDER temperatures.

The entire instrument cluster centered around the steering wheel pulls out and certainly enough without removing the steering whee to be able to reach in behid the cluster and unscrew the speedo cable from the speedo head. Follow the cable down to the floor, unscrew it there and pull it out of the vehicle.

I put some type of cable lubricant grease (came in a tube from a hardware store) down the throat of the removed cable and let it gradually work its way down inside the housing, reattached it and that must have resolved it as otherwise my wife would have mentioned it (her 280se)  ;)

I hope this helps or works for you!

Cheers,
Joe

I would definitely try the lube first.

That's great, I was concerned I had to do the wheel removal trick as well.
