I am having the gasket replaced around the windscreen and the installer is suggesting new glass. He says it has a couple chips, is discolored and now is the time to replace it. $200 US for the new glass.

Ditto to Patrick's comment.

The old glass gets sandblasted and new glass is clearer and th wipers work better.

I think front windscreen prices are very reasonable - almost a bargain.

a pointless fact, of no interest to anyone -

Glass is not actually solid, it changes shape slowly over time. It actually saggs to the bottom thanks to gravity. Over a 20 year period a vertical sheet of glass will actually get thicker at the bottom than at the top.

You are the first person in 20 years or so that I have heard that from ! Usually, when I tell people that, they laugh at me, but you only have to look at the glass window on an old house and measure the thickness top and bottom to verify that that is indeed what happens.

Ok, good news! I think. I just spoke to the shop and he told me that it turns out they didn't have the glass in stock but I am getting an original windscreen shipped in and for the same price of $200 US. He says I am saving a lot of money. Any thoughts?

Unrelated, they had a vinyl guy look at my dash cracks and he stated it is too dry to bother repairing. What are my options beside a dash cap?

MB Mike, wise decision on the new windshield, better still to get the original MB part.
