Has anyone pulled out the power window motor?

Hi all,
This little project is really testing me.
I have got the regulator out (drivers side) and unbolted the motor which is still lying inside the door. It seems to be sitting behind the window channel with no way of getting it out from behind this channel, there just isn't the space!  Do I have to remove this channel? If so how? I'm going nuts... I have gone through the service manual, but they neglect to explain some really important points.

NG - which door are you doing?
for me, after having stripped a few 116s, gutting a door takes about 10-15mins with the tools at hand.  from memory, you can remove the motor and regulator individually by undoing the motor from the regulator by undoing the 3 allen bolts which link the two...failing this, its pretty easy to strip the door to get it all out, if you get stuck and want to do this, i can post a more detailed one if you like (however, if you have tinted windows i would advise against this as you will scratch the tint)
best of luck

Isn't it funny how quickly you forget this stuff! I am certain I didn't remove the window channel but I seen to recall some trick. I am thinking that it was simply that you did need to remove the motor and couldn't get it out in one hit. Seeing a guy tomorrow who has done this more times than me so will ask him, but I reckon someone on here will know and just hasn't seen the post yet.

Hi guys,
I am doing the r/hand drivers door. I have actually got the whole regulator unit out after unbolting the motor... that was not really too much trouble. But where it gets interesting for me is now the motor seems to be wedged behind the window channel. Physically, there just doesn't seem to be a space to pull it out, unless, you take out the window channel. Question is, how do you take this channel out, OR is there another solution to this problem.

Is the window up or down and do you have a side intrusion bar.

Hi Bill,
The widow is all the way up, and yes I believe I have an intrusion bar.
Is it possible I need to slide the door holder after loosening the screws... would this give me more room?

I have never removed a motor from an Oz side-intrusion bar door but understand that the space is quite tight.

I will look later this afternoon but my memory is that all the mechanism and motor comes out in one piece.

Have you checked in the handbook.

Hi Bill,
I reckon there is only 2 possible scenarios.
1. pull out the window channel
2. remove or move the door holder unit. This is a unit that bolts on just below the regulator.
The manual says to move the door holder if space is tight... so I will try this.
Failing this though, I would like to know how to get the channel out. There seems to be a fitting at the base of the door (no bolts) that may require some trick to unplug... any clues??

From memory the front window channel bolts to the door behind the mirror (you have to take out the mirror first).

Scroll down in this link to see how to remove mirror

The channel lifts out vertically with the lower end being pushed into a rubber block which fits into lower edge of the door. The rubber block is often SNAFU and I had difficulty finding the part no for a replacement. I was lucky to score a good one from a second hand door I already had.

I have a door apart at the moment so will go down to the shed in the next hour or so and take a photo.

You've probably done it by now but to remove the front window channel from the driver's door you would be advised to remove the mirror but it could be possible to do it without this removal.

Here is a photo of the channel

The bottom edge is held by a rubber block and the shaped edge fits into it.

It is held at the top by the two screws that are visible when the trim is removed.

Here is a picture showing the three holes for the mirror and the two threaded holes for the door attachment point.

My window regulator and motor for this door is deeply buried at the moment but my memory was that it all came out in one piece.

Autohauz.com sell a kit to replace all the wearing parts in the window lift mechanism.

Hi Bill,
I haven't done it yet, I'll tackle it on the weekend.
Thanks for the info and pic though, now I know what I am in for.
Much appreciation and cheers,
