My glovebox door fits the same exact way - not precise at all.  Any suggestions?

Also, why do the cig trays and lighters on the 70s benz's all seem inop?  Mine pops out randomly and I've yet to see a functional lighter as I suppose the wire breaks when the popping out problem occurs.

In my 350 I found the lighter worked sporadically purely due to the slide contacts on the side of the ashtray.  A 280S didn't work because the two pronged electrical connector was disconnected.  to fix that you have to take out the ashtray then undo the two screws that hold the bracket in place.  Remove the bracket and there'll be a two pronged connector and wire on the left hand side.  Connect them up and refit the bracket.

With regards to why the ashtray doesn't sit still.  Use a flat blade screw driver to bend out all the flat metal springs that contact the ashtray.  The ashtray itself has a flat leaf kind of spring at the top with a tab that should catch the bracket when you open the ashtray.  Try bending that upwards further. To empty the ashtray requires that tab to be pushed down and I'd say over the years it bends further then it should, hence the tab wont catch and the astray pops out too easily.

Can't help with the glovebox except to say someone commented a long time ago that you could fiddle with the latch on the dashboard to make the glovebox sit flush.  haven't tried it myself.  Either way, the glavebox lid's interior is still warped.

TY Oscar - I'll check that out.

By the way - pls do not in any way let my comments seem "finding fault" with the fabulous interior restoration pictured.  I just noticed it was exactly the same glovebox lid fit as my Max.

Hi John,

Yes, that glovebox really annoys me, apparently its caused by the interior light switch pressing on the LHS (I guess RHS in your case) of the glovebox door.

I haven't looked at it since I made the post about it but it's the last job (I think) to complete the interior.  Thank you for the nice comments about the interior.  The centre console and radio was the issue, however the car was very, very nice to start with.

Regards,

Carl.
