Hi Brian,

I can't comment on the Vitason speakers mentioned in the "Rear Speaker Grilles" post, however a friend has used them in his car and he says they are great, I trust his opinion.  I don't know which model he used though, sorry.  It was some years back.

I used the Philips ones pictured, they fitted perfectly, no more holes needed to be drilled.

Regards,

Carl.

Wbrian63,

If you search under 4", you will find several suitable speakers depending on what you desire. The most suitable types are the "FX 10" 4" two-way and another is the "FR 10 HM" dual-cone type. There is also a more expensive version of the former.

To fit in the 116 (Front), they need to have the triangular tabs like those that Carl has pictured, or they need to be square in shape. There are also a number of other cheap full-range units that could be used with the original Beckers successfully.

I have the FR 10 (not FR 10 HM) in my W201... I like the sound.

Thanks guys.

What about for the rear deck?

I scored a very very nice Becker Mexico on eBay recently (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190452811959&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT), and I'll want to modify the unit to accept a MP3 plug in device (I'll find the thread when the time comes), but I know I'll need speakers all-round.

Thanks and regards

That's nice Brian.  Usually the wonderbar's don't work anymore (the failure is due to the main controlling solenoid which controls this feature having burned out - and they are NLA).  Competitive price.  Well done.

Thanks - I've yet to power it up - need to get the speakers first.

It looks as good as the pictures indicate. Realistically, I'll likely add a satellite radio tuner to the car and never actually use the radio. I got hooked on Sirius radio years ago and can't stand the constant chatter of radio DJ's anymore.

I'm also a big fan of "books on tape" (which is a rather antiquated term) - more like books on iPod... I've got enough of those to keep me away from broadcast radio until I'm too deaf to hear...

The few times I've had the 6.9 on the road, frankly, the music of the engine has been enough...

Hi Carl Jones, could you tell me the depth of those front speakers you put in?

Will help me with my up and coming Audio upgrade plans (and make it easier to buy off the net)  8)

I am looking at Component speakers myself, had a set in my 280SEL made by Kicker and were excellent  :)

I've bought Blaupunkt speakers a year ago. They are called GTX402:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/1360398-speakers-blaupunkt-gtx402-pioneer-ts-g1040r.html

I used them without the included grills of course. I tested the pioneers also, but they have such a high tweeter that they didn't seem to fit behind the original grills.

But with the Blaupunkts I got a little bit in trouble on the passenger side: the magnets have a larger diameter than the old speakers and the cable shoes collided just a little with the handle mechanism of the air vent just above the speakers.
I have to add that my dash is the early model with the 4" speakers towards you, not on top of the dash.

The air vent handle mechanism touched the cable shoes when moved, causing cracked sound. I turned that speaker the other way around so that the cable shoes go free. But I still feel the handle mechanism scraping the magnet edge just a little.

The sound of these Blaupunkts is much better than the old paper speakers.

Two things to check: tweeter height and depth/diameter of magnet

EDIT: I tested both speakers (Pioneer & Blaupunkt) at the store with help of the intendent, just to make sure they would fit. The pioneers were to high and they were no option. However I tested only on the drivers side, that's why I got in trouble on the passenger side when I mounted that speaker.

Hi G,

Sorry, I don't know, maybe there is something on the net about the height?  I am overseas at the moment but could have a look for you when I'm back in a week or so.

Regards,

Carl.

Sony 4" fit nicely too.  These were taken out of a Camry I sold, and sounded very ordinary.  Strangely enough they actually sound very good in the dash of the 280.  Ordinary photo...

Update - I searched across the US and found a few suppliers that carried the two Vitason speakers I was looking for (FX10 for the front, and FX13 for the rear). Most had one or the other, neither had both. Some prices were reasonable, others were not.

Found a supplier in The Netherlands - Europe Audio. Reasonable pricing, and offered both models. FX10's in stock, FX13's had to be ordered. $US17 each for the fronts, and $US19.81 each for the rears.

PayPal'd $ on 12/02. Items received a couple of days ago via Fedex international shipping (which cost $US34.18 - I think a reasonable sum considering the weight (6 or so #'s), and distance.

They charged me an additional $4.02 "paypal convenience fee" - didn't notice if extra fees were applied to CC orders.

Just unboxed them yesterday - appear to be a quality product. Maybe in a few days I can cobble together a test rig to see how everything sounds connected and working.

Do you have the dimensions on the speakers? as the depth, an how wide the magnet is. if you can get me that, I would like to have them in millimeters.

wbrian63

Are you looking for the Philips speakers or the Vitason speakers?
