hey all...i just bought a very nice wooden gear knob for my 450 SEL...it screws onto the shifter...but i can't work out how to get the original rubber one off...any help? i tried unscrewing it...but that just uncrewed the whole shifter lever out of the trans...which was horribly difficult to get back in :(

I'd like to know the answer to this one as well - and nobody's answered it yet in this thread.

So, how do you remove the shifter knob FROM THE SHIFT LEVER?

I've just realised that the new shifter must be like the one below, ie, without the shaft.

Unfortunately, the simple answer is that you can't remove the shaft from the old shifter knob, it's moulded on.  See the pics at the bottom, I've just sacrificed one to find out.  If you need a shaft have a look here Carshine.  Go to "Mercedes" then "Gear Knobs".  There's a section there for shafts.  There's probably some US sites too but I haven't checked yet.
