Block coloured air box
« on: 14 November 2008, 08:11 AM »

I'm just curious, but is it common for W116s' to have engine block coloured air filter boxes? I've seen a lot of 350SE/350SL/450SE/450SEL/450SL engines with black coloured air filter boxes, but mine is the same colour as the iron/steel coated engine.

Sorry for the blurry picture, I'll take a clearer one next time.

zagato, that's the first time I've seen an early d-jet v8 air box coloured like that.  Some V8 w126's have silver/alloy coloured boxes (not sure which ones, maybe they all do) but they fit k-jet w116 v8's as well. So you may see the odd post 1976 V8 w116 wearing a w126 silver coloured air box but they're not orginal for the w116 series.  They're all black.

Is it paint or alloy?  All in my experience are black - but that is obviously an original box.

It could be paint, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's alloy since the insides are also that colour. I'm assuming a previous owner swapped this in many years ago. None the less, I like it since it makes the engine look nicer among the other dirty bits.
I may try to paint the distributor cap cover the same colour some time. Speaking of which, I have a suspicion that the distributor cap cover is not original since it does not fit on properly. At least the cap and wires look pretty new when I took it off.

It does look good.  They're pretty heavy though and if you had a black one to compare it with you'd soon see if it was an alloy with natural alloy colour but I still reckon it's painted, maybe powder coated even.

The distributor cover has been talked about whether it was original or not.  I can't remember what the result was but they are original as the cap you've got on the coil.  Some cars have then, some don't.  I've got a cracked distributor cover in front of me and regardless of when they first appeared, they've all got an MB part number.  This 280 one I'm looking at is 0001581385.

If it's not sitting on there properly, double check that it's aligned so the wider sides go over the dizzy cap clamping screws and that the two lugs on the cover below where the ignition wires come out, are firmly snapped together.

This is what they should look like -  Cool

Sandblasted, powder coated and baked to a bullet proof enamel finish. Clips are in getting cad plated, this is waiting for TJ-450 to pick up....

What's that arc-shaped depression in the snorkel just where it enters the airbox?  My LHD cars don't have that.  In fact, my LHD 6.9 aircleaners are identical to those on K-jet 350's and 450's.

No idea, mine doesent have that either, nor did tj's other one thats getting done.

The Epc tells me that the air cleaner is exactly the same part number for each and every single K-jet v8 model of that era.

Yes, that is one strange air cleaner. It doesn't have the hole for the CC cable either.

P.B., you read my mind (either that or I'm extremely predictable Wink).

I will be ordering clips this week, so I'll just add an extra.  Cool
