Amber Reversing Lights

I have a 1973 350se which has been registered in France since new. However what intrigues me is that the reversing lights are amber and when I bought it there was no bulb holder for the rear fog light so I had to buy a set of replacement internals for the off side rear. The rear fog now works. I have not seen another w116 with the same rear lights. Any suggestions

Don't know why, but up until about 1970 the amber rear indicators did double duty as reversing lights in Australian made cars (Holdens, Fords, etc.). Don't know if that applied elsewhere in the world and it certainly did not apply by the time the W116 appeared here.

Maybe it was regulatory... like those yellow headlights.
