Aha, my olive green is then def kaledoniengrun. I quite like it - looks like snot-green.

Kolin I must say even I was a bit dubious about yr petrol-green - the petrol green that s-class posted is also what I had in mind!

S-class, what about thistle-green? Or is that the silbergrun?

I used to have such nice pics of that 280S - dad unfortuanately left all our photo-albums in the shed where it got rained upon...
Anyways, there was a pic, taken around 1982 (during the good old days) in the Northern parts of Namibia - where game is rife next to the road - especially Kudu. Well, dad poached a nice young Kudu bull of around 400pds from the driver's seat of the Benz and with the help of his mates loaded it into the boot of the Benz - horns dragging on the tar road.
Needless to say Gramps was highly upset by Dad's behaviour as they were/are highly respected people in their town...
wish I still had that pic...

Silber-grun is the colour commonly (incorrectly) called thistle green.

861 silber-grun was available on W116's up till 1979.

881 silberdistel (thistle green) is a different (but similar) colour available from 1979 to 1986.

I don't think german build 116's were supplied in 881, though I do think it was available on CDA cars.

Anyhow, this is 881 :

Its greener than 861, and I would say it is the colour of your car pompy.

You can confirm by looking at the VIN on the firewall.  On CDA cars oyu see the VIN followed by the CDA build number followed by the three digit paint code.  CDA cars lack the 'options' plate found on german bild cars.

well it seems that mine is kaledonien grun.
always thought it was petrol from a merc advert i once saw in some mag that said something like "A merc that can go over a million kilometrers on 12 liters of petrol"
then went on to explain that the merc was painted with 12 litres of paint and you could driver over a million kilometres with your car. and the colour was thsi green.
well thank you s-class for getting us all straight on the colours of green.
now pompy asked out loud how its got the extra green on the door.
well, it so happened that our bookeeper lady some many years ago was without a car for the weekend, so the old man lent her the car.came back with a dent in the front door. man was he cheesed off and she said it was there already.i said he should have fired her on the spot. then he parked it by the house and turned the wheel as parking and the whole car shifted and dented the back door.
So he sent the car in for panelbeating and it came back stunning.
but a few years later, the rust came through and the paint peeled off and the trimming came off as well, so to stop the growth of rust, i used my sons graffitti paint as my eye told me the lid of the spray can  looked the closest colour to the car.
but when i sprayed it on it wasnt the same, but the rot has stopped. i think i will have to replace the doors and do a respray of the car.
like i said to GrantV this weekend, i am almost scared to strat, but start i will with a new fuel pomp.
